When I saw the show a month earlier, she was present in the scene. Not only was she there, but her brief moment tremendously overshadowed Jessie Mueller's take on Julie for the scene. The performance I saw also included the scene post-Soliloquy before the act break. I would say Margaret Colin wailing over Billy's body and Renee Fleming joyfully yelling about rum as a curtain line were two of the most memorable moments from the performance, and both have since been cut.
Mueller's performance has grown since those previews, but is subtle enough that I believe what Colin was doing as Mrs. Mullin would steal focus. The cut there seems to be for Mueller's benefit. |
