| (Had to make the thread title change, sorry. We don't need to keep seeing that surname. Send him back to "the swamps of home" and begone with him.) Happy Days. And no, not the one by Beckett, lol. Offhand, I can't think of any others, aside from the occasional I Love Lucy Live Onstage kind of thing - which are usually just literal re-creations of episodes, or lampoons of sitcoms, like the "Friends" one mentioned a few threads below this. I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change used to bill itself as "Seinfeld set to music," which was a ridiculous statement IMO, even in a non-literal sense. (And at least Seinfeld was funny...) I think one of the reasons sitcoms aren't adapted more often is that they are perfectly crafted to tell a quick story in bite-size chunks in less than 30 mins, and that's not always the greatest fodder for a longer and satisfying piece. I'm not saying it can't be done, but I think it's harder to create a story arc that would have the same feel as the TV show but sustain the length of a regular musical or play. Now, while we're on theme songs - and yes, "Phyllis" was certainly a tribute to "Mame" (with the added comic punchline and Leachman's priceless take at the end) - but what about this one linked below. I don't think you can get more good-ol-Broadway than this, lol. |
