That's weird because I saw the show this past Tuesday night and that scene was in the show. Maybe Bernadette was pooped from doing the matinee on Tuesday night, but I thought her voice was very raw and hoarse and she altered the melody or spoke many of the lyrics. She was a delightful warm presence but I felt the entire performance was workmanlike rather than inspired and I was not bowled over by any of it. I spent most of the evening admiring her professionalism in knowing how to save herself to get through the show. Garber is not an actor I particularly care for but he surprised and pleased me a lot with his underplaying and keeping things grounded, until he got to what I assume is a staged, fake breaking up at Bernadette's antics in the restaurant, since a lot of other posters mention him breaking up at the same moment on different evenings. I hate that sort of baloney on stage. But it was pretty much the feeling I had for the whole affair, that is was blown up to be Cartoonsville with that "sitcom" style of acting where otherwise real characters overr-react to everything like idiots so eventually nothing stands out as important. I thought the technicolor costumes signalled the same tome visually. Kate Baldwin, on the other hand, was a knockout -- it was so wonderful to hear her sing and to see someone on stage who was not shrieking and gesticulating like a wind up toy. So I don't really see what all the rapturous fuss is about. Maybe I saw an off night, but on the whole is was a evening that really did not deliver anything near to what I was expecting from the breathless accolades I'd been reading, so I guess I'm with StageLover's view on this one, it was okay to see but you're not missing anything new if you saw the last Channing revival years ago.
