I doubt that the role itself is what's causing the problems. I have seen the play twice, and it's not particularly demanding.
My guess is that Skerritt, who is 84 years old, wasn't feeling like he could sustain the Broadway schedule, and the reason for his departure ("personal reasons") was to allow him a graceful exit.
Arndt is said to have left "due to creative differences," which also sounds like a term of art. He's also not a young man, and maybe felt that he couldn't cram the role into his head in such a short period of time.
Payne, who was ready to go on day one, thus got the role.
Just my hunch. |
