The script is even worse than its detractors suggest. The first act presents them, warts and all and gets the audience loving them only to have them torn apart by the second act. And the score, which indeed is very happy is all wrong for these characters, as they turn out. IMHO only a concert performance with minimal narration has a chance to work.
