I think one of the problems for the show is that the books scenes are quite 'small' - intimate, personal, and (at times) bleak. But the songs require a 'big' show sound, staging and choreography.
I recently saw a small scale production - which I enjoyed, but these are songs that call for big orchestrations, and a big 'production number' aesthetic, and so the score felt underpowered. I have never seen a large scale production, but I suspect the smaller intimate details would be lost in a grand production. |
