| It was certainly an event that Fall, and the expectation in the house with Preston and Peters singing Herman was high. The score, on first hearing, was charming. "Look What Happened to Mabel" was my favorite. We all recognized the "Dolly" "Mame" moment with the "Mabel/Room..." number, which felt contrived and unearned in the story. And over-cooked. The show was huge of course, and filled the stage. Only after it was long gone from B'way and the album became such a keeper did the glories of the whole score begin to be recognized. It's still such a beauty, but tethered to a story that is likely un-fixable. |
