Brent Carver is as wrong as wrong can be for Mack Sennett. He IS too old for it (mid 60's) but that's beside the point. He is all vulnerability and quivering emotion and quiet and soft idiosyncratic line readings. Mack is a bull in a china shop. (Remember: he WON'T send roses; Brent Carver would be sending Mabel a dozen daily.)
It needs someone strong, masculine, American (even though he was Canadian!) with a rough-hewn sexuality. I could maybe see Norbert Leo Butz doing it. Maybe Andy Karl? Brian d'Arcy-James? |
