| Inspired by the reports of Liza's concert last week in CA and the dreamcasting threads below, I couldn't help myself. Of course, I know this could NEVER, ever be. I realize that the physical and vocal challenges Liza now faces makes this an absolute impossibility - but I can fantasize, can't I? I would have LOVED to see Liza as Mame. I think she would have been spectacularly good. Maybe even definitive. She has just the right amount of warmth and kooky eccentricity to make Mame work. The songs would have, at one time, sat nicely in her voice. I know the show has problems but Liza and a good director (Jerry Zaks?) could have worked magic with that show. 25 years ago? It might have made quite a splash. Liza was in fine form around the time of her "3 Weeks at Radio City" engagement in the early 90's. I remember seeing that show (3) times. When she opened with Teach Me Tonight in that (Issac Mizrahi?) jacket - I was in heaven. When she was good - no one, and I mean no one, could match the electricity she generated on a stage. Her Carnegie Hall concerts in the 80's are probably my best memories of her artistry. Truly a unique, gifted, one-of-a-kind triple threat artist. We just don't have many any more. |
