| Her star burned brightly for a few years. Was a huge fan of Liza in the early '70s. Saw all her movies, bought all her albums. My first opportunity to see her live was in 1974, I guess, when she gave a concert in Baton Rouge, LA, at LSU, of all places. She was a big, big star at the time and the arena sold out. My best friend and equally starry-eyed Liza fan went with me. We were tingling with excitement as the show began. As I recall it, fairly early in the show, she performed "Ring Them Bells" with dancers and everything. She was strutting and dancing and singing all out, when my friend and I turned to one another and simultaneously exclaimed, "She's lip-synching!" In that moment, the scales fell from our young eyes. We were aghast. A few years later, my next (and last) encounter with Liza was on Broadway in the truly awful musical "The Act." It was so slimy, I had to go home and take a shower. 1970s show biz at its worst. A friend took me, but after seeing it, I insisted on reimbursing him for the ticket (which at the time was the highest-priced ticket ever on B'way) so I would feel comfortable dissing the travesty. And, yes, there were rumors at the time that some of her numbers were "sweetened" electronically. |
