And you have a similarly daffy quality in thinking she could pull off Dotty Otley at 72 and in the shape she is in!
It's a farce that needs laser-sharp timing and a very agile, supple body. Pat Routledge was about 53 when she originated the role. Dorothy Loudon was older- 59- when it opened in NYC. I could see perhaps someone like Bernadette Peters pulling it off, but Liza needs something that won't require a lot of movement and, I would guess, not a lot of lines. In the clip from the Michael Feinstein concert that I saw she seemed to have a hard time making it through "New York, New York". The voice didn't sound bad but she looked to be having trouble with the words.
I agree she was great on ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT. I wish that UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMDT or MODERN FAMILY had written something for her. They often employ older, once-famous actors (Norman Lloyd was on MF around the time he turned 100!). |
