When I first saw the show on Broadway I was completely underwhelmed. I liked it well enough, but I wasn't at all clear what the fuss was about. Since then I have seen a great regional production (Aurora Theatre/Atlanta), a very good high school production (also in Atlanta) and a fantastic NYU student production last year....and I have reconsidered the show. it's beautiful, heartfelt and very, very relevant to the times we are living in. The score is quite ambitious AND infectious, and it gives ample opportunity for strong comic and dramatic performances. And, honestly, how often do we get to see a show where there are multiple excellent parts for people of all ages?
I would welcome a film version, though I have reservations. Lin Manuel is too old for Usnavi....but I wouldn't mind seeing him DIRECT this. |
