It's depressing how many of the posts in this thread are devoted to bashing Lauren Ambrose and/or Diana Rigg, neither of whom seem to me to have behaved badly or unprofessionally, and how few comment on Lincoln Center management, which is clearly at fault.

As several people have pointed out below, it's well-known that Eliza is an extremely demanding role to play eight times a week. Actresses from Julie Andrews on have commented on the fact. It's clear that management should have created a schedule that included an alternate from the beginning of the run. One obvious reason they didn't is that Ambrose isn't a Bette Midler-category star. (And maybe in her eagerness to play the role, Ambrose didn't want to raise the possibility of an alternate, and underestimated the toll eight performances a week would take on her. Hardly an indictable offense!)

Once the eminently reasonable albeit belated decision was made to use an alternate, it was management's responsibility to inform the cast and the crew. It's inexcusable that they didn't do that.

Management should also should also offer ticket-holders who want to see Ambrose the chance to exchange their tickets.
