| Yup...have Google. Yup...know lots about how film musicals get made (or not) and why. Am part of that industry and have been involved in these kind of projects and the decision-making around them. Yup...know the history and popularity of IN THE HEIGHTS. That said, lots of successful stage musicals can't seem to get made (PIPPIN, SPRING AWAKENING, NEXT TO NORMAL, et al) despite big success in regional theatre and-- in some cases-- schools. And when films get announced-- and directors get announced with them-- they frequently get made in a very different way than the official press releases on Google indicate. Jon M Chu is going to have many, many opportunities to do big things after CRAZY RICH ASIANS opens. His schedule may or may not lend itself to making IN THE HEIGHTS, but I think it'd be great if it does work out. He's very talented and the show is wonderful. But that should not/will not end speculation about who might ultimately be cast-- or direct-- an anticipated film version of ITH. You can check with the several "announced" directors of WICKED (still not in production) for some perspective. Studio Musicals are very expensive to make and market. Their global box office is unpredictable (though MAMMA MIA helped shift that perception). Lots of folks in Hollywood love musical theatre and would really love to be involved in the making of a film musical. But stage properties are tougher than they look to adapt-- especially ones with serious dramatic elements. And they are financially risky.... a lot riskier than the Live Musicals on TV route that seems to be the new direction for lots of properties. |
