The book doesn't work in a number of ways. As you point out, beat by beat the story doesn't scan. Moments don't create new moments. But even more importantly, the characters' psychologies also don't scan. Rake has no reason to go in the closet. He has money that he inherited from his father, and we never see him being marginalized because of his sexuality. In fact, gay male white artists were not marginalized because of their sexuality if they kept it out of their work. People with overtly gay sexual content had more obstacles unless they were already plugged in to power networks like Robert Mapplethorpe or David Wojnarowicz. But Rake doesn't have any of that. He is a graffiti artist and all we ever see him create is his Tag, no images of sex or the male body like Keith Haring.
