The director for that film chose some takes that he thought were more naturalistic at the expense of good singing. Yes, Anne Hathaway won the Oscar, but she was capable of giving a much better sung performance of her song. I had seen her in "Carnival" at Encores, and she had a beautiful voice. But the director went for a "Passion of Joan of Arc" kind of full-on close-up during pretty much the entire song and chose a take where her voice seemed to be getting tired. Perhaps Crowe had better vocal takes which the director decided to not use as well.
