I read the script years ago. It's not badly written; it was quite professional in fact. It's just that the second act is Mabel's downfall. She falls into bad company and with drugs and if I recall, Mack can't or won't or didn't intervene to help her. It's a wonderful score, and you are correct that not all the songs are happy. "I Won't Send Roses" and "Time Heals Everything" both conjure up much emotion. A number of attempts have been made to re-write the libretto, and perhaps at some point there will be one which works, perhaps one which makes an extended fantasy kind of happy ending for Mabel that Mack always wanted, even perhaps employing a Deus ex machina like Brecht did in "Threepenny Opera"? Or they could also just depart from the real story and have Mabel leave show biz and happily become the owner of her own deli ("the kid from the deli" which wasn't true anyway) and have Mack be her loyal daily customer.
