HELLO DOLLY Saturday afternoon

Wanted to see Bernadette before she leaves, so I took my 13-year-old son to this. I have a mixed opinion of the show: I appreciate its craft, especially Michael Stewart's book, and I like some of the songs, especially Put on Your Sunday Clothes. Bernadette was wonderful, standing out especially in the comedy scenes like in the Harmonia Gardens restaurant. She did the eating scene in the courtroom well, but it went on so long, I confess to wishing it would end and they would get to the number. I found Creel a little bland but Baldwin was quite good and in excellent voice, and Stemp sure is a terrific dancer. Don't always love Garber, but he was very good in this, as crusty as Vandergelder is supposed to be. You can shoot me, but I always found the title number kind of annoying; I just don't see the brilliance of a bunch of chorus boys strutting across the stage flapping their arms like windmills. And it really does not move the story forward at all. I haven't always loved Jerry Zaks' directing, but he did a good enough job with this, especially the comedy scenes. The two choices I didn't care for were 1) having Dolly play "So Long Dearie" in one before the curtain, with the man she's delivering it to nowhere in sight and 2) cutting the medley from the curtain call; I really enjoy that part of the show. Good overture. My son really enjoyed it, and liked the title song a lot more than I do. Another thank you to those who helped me look for a nearby wood-fired pizza joint; we went for, and quite liked, Capizzi.
