I have to admit that I haven't seen the current production, but my response to that is that there is really good old-fashioned musical comedy and less-good old-fashioned musical comedy. I admire some aspects of Hello, Dolly! a lot, but in my experience of the show it falls short of being really good old-fashioned musical comedy, despite many good and even excellent elements. Perhaps this production would make me change my mind. I'm told there are textual adjustments to the book, some new lines, and perhaps those help. |
