That was also the way it was done in the original production. The only explanation seems to be that Vandergelder has to make a costume change, but since they apparently didn't mind adding some new lines to this production, perhaps they could have added something to give him a chance to make a quick offstage costume change.
Actually, I don't understand why a production couldn't just transition back the Hay and Feed Store with Vandergelder just arriving there after his night in jail and taking off his jacket and changing onstage. And just cut Dolly's line about how well he wears faun yellow and puce. |
