Kerstin Anderson in My Fair Lady Today

I went to see My Fair Lady again today and I thought Kerstin Anderson as Eliza was wonderful. Unlike Lauren Ambrose who is quite good in the part, Anderson sang every song without showing any effort at all. Her high notes in I Could Have Danced All Night and Show Me were breathtaking. If you have any hesitation about seeing her on a Sunday matinee, you needn't worry. I would love to see her again.

Harry Haddon-Paton has added layers to his performance that weren't there before. He is also getting more laughs. His rendition of I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face today was just perfection. I don't know why he doesn't get as much loud applause as Eliza after I Could Have Danced All Night but to me he is giving the best performance in the show. I do love this production now despite the unsatisfying ending.

I think this time around I felt less sympathy for Eliza after she sings Without You and leaves the room triumphant. Especially when that scene is followed by Higgins' soliloquy. She has her vengeance at Higgins at the end but at what cost?

I do hope this production is filmed for Live from Lincoln Center or Great Performances on PBS. Or better yet becomes available on DVD.
