| I first saw Hello Dolly with Pearl Bailey in the title role and felt that she was wonderful and that the show was pretty good. It was my first time seeing a Broadway musical production. Until then I had seen several stock and community theater productions and indeed followed up my Broadway experience by seeing a community theater production. it was so so in every aspect (though the songs were still wonderful) I then saw Channing in the 1978 revival and though I thought she was quite as entertaining as she had been in the 1974 production of Lorelei, the show did appear to me to be a bit corny and creaky, almost forced. A couple of productions I saw later did noting to change my opinion of the show. It wasn't until I saw Tovah Feldshuh in the 2006 production at Paper Mill Playhouse that i once again felt this is a very funny and fun musical. That impression was reinforced many times over with Bette Midler as Dolly in this most recent Broadway production and the subsequent performances of Donna Murphy and Bernadette Peters prove it. Is it perfect. probably not but I would prefer to just take it as it is and enjoy it as one of the most sublime musical comedy experiences on Broadway today. I am so grateful I got to see it. |
