Whether there is romance between Henry and Eliza in PYGMALION is questionable. But from the moment Lerner and Loewe insert a lyric that says, "I only know when he began to dance with me, I could have danced all night," it is a ROMANCE. Robbing MY FAIR LADY of the romance (as I feel this production does) is willfully ignoring the writing. If you want to do PYGMALION, then by all means, do it. MFL is a different ball of wax. This is an elegant production, beautifully designed at every turn. But this director's approach to the material effectively neutered it for me.
