When she was just an understudy, I imagine that Anderson was probably directed to give a version of Ambrose's performance, but, now that she is playing the role in her own right once a week, I wonder if she has been given permission to bring more of her own interpretation to the role. She wouldn't be able to go off completely in a new direction, of course, since she still has to fit in with the rest of the cast, but she might be able to make more subtle changes in the playing that would make hers a different Eliza and allow the audience to interpret things in a different way.
I loved Ambrose (mostly) and I hope I have a chance to see Anderson at some point. |
