Agree that the most problematic part of this was the book. I had a really hard time following what was going on in the first act though I felt the second act was a lot better and gave the characters the space they needed to breathe and develop. I didn't "get" Binky or why a wedding to her would be a PR stunt since he was a total unknown. Some of the songs were fabulous, but some were downright awful and as someone commented above, the lyrics were banal (like the songs where the crowd is begging to get into the club.)

I think it's a musical in search of an identity. Parts, like the characters of the prosecutor and Binky are pure satire and yet some of it wants to be earnest and emotional. I think it is hard to keep an audience at a distance in a Brechtian detached sort of way and then expect them to care or root for the characters later on. AMERICAN PSYCHO kept that detachment nicely, but I don't think the creators ever thought about making us "care" for Patrick Batemen. I also didn't buy that Sammy had such star power - she sang one song nicely but the others were just okay.
