In most any Tony season, Andy Karl would've won the Tony for his Herculean efforts in ''Groundhog Day.'' And the saga of being a trouper on opening-weekend and his leg injury should've sealed the deal. He won Outer Critics and Drama Desk, where he didn't go head-to-head with Ben.
Karl also won the Olivier Award, beating the heavy hometown British favorite: Charlie Stemp in ''Half a Sixpence.''
And when Ben was Off-Broadway in ''Dear Evan Hansen,'' the Drama Desk didn't even NOMINATE him (or ''Evan Hansen'' as Best Musical).
Speaking of song count, I will always believe Montego Glover was robbed at the Tony Awards. She did a handful of showstoppers in ''Memphis,'' notably ''Colored Woman.'' But she lost to Catherine Zeta-Jones, who couldn't pull off her one solo. (See her performance on the 2010 Tonys.)
So much of winning awards is about timing and the competition. There are ''strong'' seasons and weak ones.
Could anything have beat ''Hamilton'' for Best Musical? Or ''The Book of Mormon''? ''Or ''The Producers''?
(And what if ''Hamilton,'' ''The Book of Mormon'' and ''The Producers'' were all in the same season? Etc., etc.) |
