| Equity no longer allows literal "run-of-the-play" contracts but I don't know when that changed; maybe there were "run-of-the-play" contracts in 1996 when CHICAGO started. If not, perhaps he was actually on a "pink" Chorus Contract which is indeed open-ended but allows the actor to give two-weeks' notice (four if mutually agreed) of termination. The producer can give similar notice, but only for Just Cause. If the actor protests and the producer loses in arbitration, the producer must pay up to fifteen weeks' of the then-current minimum salary. In Jeff's case that would have meant a buyout of about $30,000, which I guess the producers were unwilling to pay. |
