I don't see why they would've thought ''The Full Monty'' would win Best Musical. ''The Producers'' was a pop-culture & press juggernaut.
At the Drama Desks, ''The Producers'' won 11 out of its 14 nominations, including Best Musical. (''Monty'' won only 1 out of 12, for Music.)
At the Outer Critics, ''The Producers'' won 8 out of its 10 nominations, including Best Musical. (''Monty'' was up for 7 and got skunked.)
So it shouldn't have been a complete surprise that ''The Producers'' won a record-breaking 12 Tonys out of its 15 nominations. |
