It's hard for me to imagine ''Soft Power'' WITHOUT Conrad Ricamora, since his face and TV fame might help sell tickets.
Conrad would be a Tony contender, as would Alyse Alan Louis, who's Hillar-ious as ''Mrs. Clinton,'' and Francis Jue as ''DHH.''
''Soft Power'' also has two topnotch scene-stealers in Austin Ku as ''Bobby Bob'' and Raymond J. Lee as ''Randy Ray/ Veep.''
Lee is notably breathtaking in more ways than one in the show's finale: He holds one amazing note for about 15 seconds.
''Soft Power'' wrapped up last night in S.F., buoyed by a very vocal and pumped-up audience (and terrific Asian-American turnout).
I'm guessing it plays the Public first, and its NYC reception will determine what happens next. The actors sound cautiously optimistic. One of them told me that the creative team already has a list of revisions and tweaks they want to make, so that assumes some kind of future production.
And for the record, Conrad shuttled between the two coasts for ''How to Get Away With Murder'' and ''The King and I.'' |
