Absolutely. Which is why I referred to Playbill.com, TheaterMania.com and Broadway.com as ''ostensibly theater news sites.'' They exist, to varying degrees, to sell theater tickets. No one expects them to do original reporting or investigative pieces that would endanger their relationship with the publicists of Broadway shows or their access to their clients. They deal in rewritten press releases and light features that are promotional in nature.
Nevertheless, each site prides itself on delivering ''the latest news.''
Broadway.com: ''The site contains the most complete editorial coverage of theater on the Web, including the latest news.''
Playbill.com: ''Read the latest about Broadway musicals and plays, from show announcements to casting and reviews.''
TheaterMania.com: ''Read all of our up-to-minute coverage from Broadway and beyond.''
Loeffelholz died on June 29. News of it started appearing around July 5. But not at these 3 sites, which each could've run a straight obit.
(Full disclosure: I wrote ''The Leading Men'' column for Playbill, from 2003-2006. And I currently write for BroadwayWorld.com.) |
