| What really makes this fun to think about, for me, is that I don't think there has ever been a really successful or even good production of the piece in a major stage production that I've seen or that has been documented. The original Broadway production that ALW hates so much looks like it was bizarre and creative and interesting if also perhaps very misguided and bad? I don't know, I wasn't alive and there's hardly any footage of it. (does anyone know if it's in the NYPL of Performing Arts?) But outside of that, the film version is the only one that I think really does it well. All other productions of it contain as much or more that is embarrassing as good (including, sadly, the recent NBC live broadcast -- though actually it probably had the least embarrassing direction and design of the major recent revivals). But Prince is such a genius direction, and his work especially back then was so above most others. I'm really curious what he and Bennett would have done with it/to it... I certainly think he elevated Evita with his direction that it's never really reached since, love the score though I do. I think JSC and Evita are ALW's best scores and most interesting shows... I wish we could have seen what Prince, or Prince & Bennett together would have done with it. |
