If there was a debate about the message of THE BAND'S VISIT in the nyc press or theater world then I missed it. The beautiful and seductive idea that music brings us together and dissolves differences (or massacres) needs to be debated in terms of Israel's current reality. Erasing that debate about injustice by shifting it to humanitarian uplift is liberal zionism. And liberal zionism, largely an American political attitude towards Israel, feels like it's already losing its reason for being as Israel, the US and so many other countries move toward unapologetic authoritarianism, nationalism and racism.
