Having seen this production, I don't think it leaves any doubt that the two have admiration and affection for each other. Eliza would never have felt so hurt after the ball had that not been the case.

For what it's worth, Ambrose's Eliza seems to return to Higgins with the thought of remaining, but after hearing him blurt out "where the devil are my slippers?" she knows she can not stay. Her caress of his cheek before her departure is quite tender and affectionate, but also sad and realistic.

The moment works beautifully in and of itself. The problem, at least for me, only lies in the fact that nothing else in the piece suggests anything so bittersweet. But I bring familiarity to the production. Those who don't, generations at this point, might not feel the same way.
