| I think the plot of IN THE HEIGHTS is the least important aspect of what is essentially a character study of people in a well-defined community with a specific way of life. The show has been compared to FIDDLER in that regard, and I can see why. One of the issues in ITH is that some of the people in the neighborhood want to get out and make something bigger of their lives, whereas others are happy to stay where they are. Unsnavi is torn; at the start of the show, he thinks he wants to go back to live in the Dominican Republic, but as the action progresses, his feelings begin to change, and he ultimately decides that this neighborhood is his Home. Yes, the Lottery and the death of one of the major characters gives some spice and suspense to the narrative, as does the romance of two characters who had been friends since childhood. |
