Some of the things you criticize about Mider's work on the recording of this production are likely due to the album having been recorded while the cast was still in rehearsal and before they'd played the show in front of even a single audience. I understand why this was done (they wanted the album available for sale ASAP), but it struck me as a bad choice for exactly the reasons you state. The performances don't tend to solidify until the cast has some time in front of an audience experiencing first hand what works and what doesn't and making adjustments in the singing and the playing as needed. If you record a show before it's been in front of audiences, what you're recording is an unfinished document of the production.

Your observation that Midler was good when you saw her on stage would seem to bear this out.
