It was new and dazzling and exciting the first time in a theater - and yes seeing it on the big screen with an audience enhanced the experience enormously.
But seeing it again on a TV or computer, the desperation of the way the film is directed and the story is told shine through way too much. And in the first viewing when the song arrangements were new, they were interesting or at least what I didn't like was less apparent because I was also seeing the staging and costumes and lighting and new context and the singing etc... watching again makes me hear all the countless things I dislike or find annoying about the arrangements or song choices etc.
Maybe if I watched it again now, a decade or more later, I'd be more relaxed and it might delight me again. Who knows. |
