That (new) overture, not terribly successful on disc or in the Shubert.

Others may disagree, but I've heard it twice in the theater 11 months apart, and I find the overture unworthy. It doesn't have the brilliant edge of, say, the Herman "Mame" overture, nor does it really capture the feel of "Dolly." It's not a distinguished effort, the only excitement it generates is temporal: the show is about to start. If you are seeing it with Midler, you've had the tickets for months. The thrill of expectation. I wish it were more percussive, more emotionally engaging, more ... promising. The show never really had one (did it?), but I like the opening credits music in the film better.
