The one question I had after reading this information, and let's assume for the sake of argument that everything here is 100% accurate as reported, is how is it that someone who has been doing a job for 22 years is now somehow doing it "wrong?" Or has always been "doing it wrong?"

That makes no sense at all. The actor was hired for the job and must have been doing something right to stay in that job for 22 years without issue (that has been reported). If he was truly doing some aspect of the job wrong all these years, why was that not brought to his attention until this year and why has he been allowed to go on stage and perform the role incorrectly in front of paying audiences? There are procedures in place at every long running production to keep cast members in shape and make sure they are performing their roles as directed. Why were any issues with this actor, if there were real issues, allowed to escalate to the point where there seems to have been so much anger directed at him, but without any specific instruction as to how to change what he's doing?

This whole thing stinks to high heaven.
