Yikes, GREEN ACRES THE MUSICAL.

Is THE ADDAMS FAMILY the closest thing we've ever had to a successful TV series-to-musical adaptation? That one ran for nearly two years, but I don't think it returned its investment in the original Broadway production (maybe later, with tour and licensing). TV shows just don't seem to be a rich pool of source material, probably due to the difficulty of translating something that's meant to be ongoing and tell multiple stories into a single story with beginning, middle, and end.

Am I not thinking of something obvious? (Time will tell on Spongebob, which could clean up in regional markets.)

Both had successful musical adaptations despite not being on Broadway. Also- Jeff Marx was working on a musical of The Flintstones at one point. Not sure what its status is.

Can The Beverly Hillbillies, Petticoat Junction, and Gomer Pyle be far behind?

Actually there is a Beverly Hillbillies musical. See below for the Chicago Tribune's 2 Star review.

And not the tv show even though they had to license the theme from the show.

spongebob is from a tv show, but probably lost most of the investment at this point.

Linking my recent post partly on The Addams Family. Really, it's the television show that was the source. I'm not an expert on Charles Addams so I can't be very specific, but I think that if there had been no television series, any musical inspired by Addams's cartoons would have had to invent a great deal from scratch (staring with character names) and probably would have come up with different choices.

Directed by Alex Timbers, it was based on Paul Reubens' ''Pee-wee Playhouse'' on CBS; it played 62 performances at the Stephen Sondheim Theater.

At the end of today, ''SpongeBob SquarePants'' will have played 4 times longer than that: with 250 performances.

Actually, "Pee Wee's Playhouse" was based on earlier versions of "The Pee Wee Herman Show" that Reubens had been doing live since 1980 (and which was filmed for HBO at some point.)

SCHOOLHOUSE ROCK does extremely well in the stock and amateur market (if that counts).
