Directed by Alex Timbers, it was based on Paul Reubens' ''Pee-wee Playhouse'' on CBS; it played 62 performances at the Stephen Sondheim Theater. At the end of today, ''SpongeBob SquarePants'' will have played 4 times longer than that: with 250 performances.

Actually, "Pee Wee's Playhouse" was based on earlier versions of "The Pee Wee Herman Show" that Reubens had been doing live since 1980 (and which was filmed for HBO at some point.)
