| Isn't it time for some brilliant farcical director to do a revival. It CAN be so funny and so castable. I still recall the brilliant production directed by Gower Champion where all the sets and costumes were in black and white at ACT. Hysterical! Anyone else like this play? | |

| The film was directed by Jacques Charon, a leading member of the Comédie-Française as both actor and director. In 1966, he directed the play for the National at the Old VIc in London, with Olivier in the dual lead roles. It was a huge success. The film was much less successful. | |

| Actually, the dual roles of Chandebise and Poche were played by Albert Finney and then, when he left, by Robert Lang. Olivier played the role of the butler, Etienne. | |

| I saw that production. It was hysterical and Olivier in that small role was brilliant. The Gower Champion production was equally funny. | |

| Sorry I missed seeing it - Roundabout mounted a 1998 revival with Mark Linn Baker &, toward the end of its run, one of the understudies named Bobby Cannavale took over in a role, & this apparently was his big break! | |

| I'd always made that assumption, too. The Old Vic did a production a few years ago with Freddy Fox as Camille Chandebise. Tom Hollander took the dual roles. I don't remember much about it, other than admiring Fox, who is one of my very favourite actors and who I heard was wonderful as Tristan Tzara opposite Hollander in London in TRAVESTIES. (I loved Seth Numrich in NYC, for the record.) |

| Thanks for mentioning it. I have seen it, but I think it works far better on stage. Gower C's version moved like a silent movie. No-one stopped to take a breath. Truly memorable. | |

| Ah, Lady Barrington, how I would love, love, love to see that production. Ives and Lamos are impeccable...….but, alas, I am on the West Coast. I hope that many of the posters hie themselves to Westport for a ripping time. | |
