There were 7 shows eligible for Best Musical; 4 of them were Tony-nominated. There were maybe 8 women eligible for Outstanding Actress in a Play; 4 of them were Tony-nominated. There were 5 men eligible for Outstanding Actor in a Musical; 4 of them were Tony-nominated. You get the idea. … So if you think the Emmy nominations ''negate the recognition'' …

| There are 122 Emmy categories, which means there are around 600 nominees. If you count voiceover and narration, there are 20 acting categories. It’s still a major accomplishment to be nominated given how many shows there are now, But the Emmys have more categories than any of the other Big Four awards. | |

''Who WASN'T nominated?'' Tons of worthy actors. Among the better-known ones: Al Pacino, Emilia Clarke, Rita Moreno, Jane Fonda, Jonathan Groff, Kyle MacLachlan, Mandy Moore, Liev Schreiber, Kit Harington, Justin Hartley, etc. Plus, many lesser-known actors, like Cody Fern and Jon Jon Briones. There are hundreds and hundreds of shows are spread out over network TV, cable and streaming services. Sadly, only 7 slots doesn't begin to recognize all of the incredible performances in a given season.

Rachel Bloom didn't even get Emmy-nominated for Original Song, like she did the last two years (with Jack Dolgen & Adam Schlesinger). I wish she had won for 2017's ''We Tapped That Ass,'' featuring the tiptop tap team of Santino Fontana and Vincent Rodriguez. (See video.) Entertainment Weekly's list of underdogs who deserved Emmy nominations included Donna Lynne Champlin from ''Crazy Ex-Boyfriend.'' Other Emmy-worthy theater pros on EW's list: Sutton Foster (''Younger'') and Conrad Ricamora (''How to Get Away With Murder'').

Just watched that Champlin video, but ''Crazy Ex-Girlfriend'' did a better one: a ''Magic Mike'' spoof, ''Hot Fit Guys Have Problems, Too.'' It features David Hull, Scott Michael Foster and Vincent Rodriguez III as three guys bearing their souls and their chests at the same time. (As entertaining and as witty as some of her ''Ex'' spoofs are, i'm still not ''Crazy'' about Bloom's backstage commentary at the Tonys.)

The Emmys honored ''Jesus Christ Superstar'' this morning with a slew of nominations, and they sure knew how to love him. Among their nominations: Variety Special Live; John Legend, as Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie (even though ''Jesus'' was neither); Sara Bareilles and Brandon Victor Dixon for Supporting Actress and Actor in Limited Series or Movie, and David Leveaux and Alex Rudzinski for Directing of a Limited Series or Movie. ''Jesus Christ'' is also nominated for Casting, Costumes, Hairstyling, Lighting, Makeup, Sound Editing and Technical Direction. (About the only thing I thought the Emmys missed was Camille A. Brown's Choreography, which deserved a slot. Instead, 4 out of the 5 slots in Choreography went to ''So You Think You Can Dance.'' Inexplicably, the Emmys are rotten at nominating Choreography from live musicals.) Meantime, if Legend or Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice (who are producers of ''Jesus Christ'') win, they will complete their EGOT. Also, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul can get their EGOT if they win for Original Song: ''In the Market for a Miracle'' from ''A Christmas Story Live!'' Elsewhere: Lin-Manuel Miranda is nominated for Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for ''Curb Your Enthusiasm.'' … Diana Rigg, as Lady Oleanna in ''Game of Thrones,'' is considered to be the frontrunner to win Guest Actress in a Drama. … And Laurie Metcalf got nominated for ''Roseanne.'' The Emmys also LOVED ''The Assassination of Gianni Versace,'' nominating 6 actors: Darren Criss, Ricky Martin, Edgar Ramirez, Finn Wittrock, Penelope Cruz and Judith Light. Alas, they left out the equally impressive (but lesser-known) Cody Fern and Jon Jon Briones (''Miss Saigon''). Netflix got a record 112 Emmy nominations, but oddly got skunked for the critically acclaimed ''Mindhunter.'' How they passed over director David Fincher or its star, Jonathan Groff, is bewildering, but at least they nominated Cameron Britton for Guest Actor in a Drama Series. (See list below for complete nominations; we won't even attempt to list everyone with a theater tie who got an Emmy nod.) Finally, for the 1st time in MANY years, the Tonys are NOT nominated as a Variety Special or Special Class Program. Two words: Kevin Spacey!

I don't know how the Emmy voters nominated Cameron Britton WITHOUT nominating Jonathan Groff. Brilliant as Britton is, so was Groff, and they were scene partners in each of Britton's appearances. AwardsDaily's Joey Moser raved that Groff gave ''the best male performance of the year.''

The Tonys only received one nomination, for lighting design. The Tony-est category is probably Guest Actress in a Drama, where four of the six nominees are Tony winners: Cherry Jones, Diana Rigg, Cicely Tyson, and Viola Davis. One of the others, Samira Wiley, was in Daphne's Dive at the Signature in 2016. The other, Kelly Jenrette, has never appeared on a NY stage but was nominated for an Ovation Award in LA for Nettie in The Color Purple.

It's been reported online that CBS didn't even submit the Tonys for Best Variety Special. Interestingly, seven of the eight living people who need the Emmy to complete the EGOT are Broadway composers: Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice, Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, Elton John, Stephen Sondheim, and Alan Menken. (Menken has a non-competitive special Emmy). The other person is John Legend.

| If CBS didn't submit the Tonys, I guess the show's nominated lighting team submitted themselves. (And probably'll lose to ''Jesus Christ Superstar.'') | |

For playing Katie Bonner in ''The Accidental Wolf.'' The category is: Outstanding Actress in a Short-Form Comedy or Drama Series. Arian Moayed and Kelli did ''King Lear'' at the Public, and Arian was such a fan of hers that he wrote a role for her. And now she's an Emmy nominee!

Darren Criss, last seen in ''Hedwig'' on Broadway, is the rare Asian-American nominated for Lead Actor of a Limited Series or Movie. (Last year, Riz Ahmed won in this category for 'The Night Of,'' becoming only the first Asian man to win an Emmy for acting.) And Sandra Oh, who got a Theatre World Award for ''Stop Kiss,'' is the first Asian woman nominated for Best Actress in a Drama. If Oh wins, she'll become only the third actor of Asian descent to receive an Emmy. (Archie Punjabi, from ''The Good Wife,'' won in 2010.)

Sure, he has. Darren's mom is Filipino and his dad is English, German and Irish. He's Eurasian, just like Andrew Cunanan. And his father was Fiipino and his mother was Caucasian. It's one of the things Darren said he had in common with the character he played in ''Versace.'' Darren told IndieWire.com: “A lot of great half-Filipino actors could have done this a lot of justice, [but] when Ryan talked about doing this three years ago, before we actually got the ball rolling last year, I would joke with him saying, ‘Hey man, I would love to do this, but if you don’t want me to do it with you, I defy you to find another guy who looks kind of like him, who’s in the same age range, who’s in your Rolodex of actors. Because if you don’t cast a half-Filipino guy, the Filipino community is going to cry bloody murder. So I don’t know what your other options are!’' Many people assume Darren is Caucasian, and he's aware of his ''half-white privilege,'' which allows him to pass, like fellow Eurasian actors Keanu Reeves and Dean Cain. Darren says Filipino actors who look Asian, often don't get the same opportunities. The newly Emmy-nominated actor points to Jon Jon Briones, whom he recommended to play Cunanan's father in ''Versace'': ''He’s a Broadway veteran, he’s been acting for years, he’s not just some newbie — maybe to the film and TV world but not as a craftsman of acting. And Ryan asked me, ‘Who is this guy, I love him! Where’s he from, how come he doesn’t get roles?’ I said, ‘Ryan, he does but he’s a Filipino man who looks a certain way. You have to understand the roles he’s being offered.’ The Thai terrorist on ‘CSI.’ And he’s from the original cast of ‘Miss Saigon,’ he’s doing 'Miss Saigon' right now. He’s the Engineer on Broadway. What it takes is a role like this, hopefully, where people go, ‘oh! This guy is really good!’ It sucks we have to wait around for roles that show you off within the corner you’re put in to be able to play in the larger room.” Darren, who has family in the Philippines, also calls himself ''a seasoned Filipino food eater'' who loves his lumpia and adobo.
