In reply to: What's the buzz? Emmys shower a host of hosannas on 'Jesus Christ Superstar - Live in Concert'! - WaymanWong 12:44 pm EDT 07/12/18

Darren Criss, last seen in ''Hedwig'' on Broadway, is the rare Asian-American nominated for Lead Actor of a Limited Series or Movie.

(Last year, Riz Ahmed won in this category for 'The Night Of,'' becoming only the first Asian man to win an Emmy for acting.)

And Sandra Oh, who got a Theatre World Award for ''Stop Kiss,'' is the first Asian woman nominated for Best Actress in a Drama.

If Oh wins, she'll become only the third actor of Asian descent to receive an Emmy. (Archie Punjabi, from ''The Good Wife,'' won in 2010.)

Not that he has to but has Criss ever talked about being Asian American?

Sure, he has. Darren's mom is Filipino and his dad is English, German and Irish. He's Eurasian, just like Andrew Cunanan. And his father was Fiipino and his mother was Caucasian. It's one of the things Darren said he had in common with the character he played in ''Versace.''

Darren told IndieWire.com: “A lot of great half-Filipino actors could have done this a lot of justice, [but] when Ryan talked about doing this three years ago, before we actually got the ball rolling last year, I would joke with him saying, ‘Hey man, I would love to do this, but if you don’t want me to do it with you, I defy you to find another guy who looks kind of like him, who’s in the same age range, who’s in your Rolodex of actors. Because if you don’t cast a half-Filipino guy, the Filipino community is going to cry bloody murder. So I don’t know what your other options are!’'

Many people assume Darren is Caucasian, and he's aware of his ''half-white privilege,'' which allows him to pass, like fellow Eurasian actors Keanu Reeves and Dean Cain. Darren says Filipino actors who look Asian, often don't get the same opportunities.

The newly Emmy-nominated actor points to Jon Jon Briones, whom he recommended to play Cunanan's father in ''Versace'':

''He’s a Broadway veteran, he’s been acting for years, he’s not just some newbie — maybe to the film and TV world but not as a craftsman of acting. And Ryan asked me, ‘Who is this guy, I love him! Where’s he from, how come he doesn’t get roles?’ I said, ‘Ryan, he does but he’s a Filipino man who looks a certain way. You have to understand the roles he’s being offered.’ The Thai terrorist on ‘CSI.’ And he’s from the original cast of ‘Miss Saigon,’ he’s doing 'Miss Saigon' right now. He’s the Engineer on Broadway. What it takes is a role like this, hopefully, where people go, ‘oh! This guy is really good!’ It sucks we have to wait around for roles that show you off within the corner you’re put in to be able to play in the larger room.”

Darren, who has family in the Philippines, also calls himself ''a seasoned Filipino food eater'' who loves his lumpia and adobo.
