"So many films have been ruined by split second edits; Chicago (Reached For The Gun and All That Jazz) and the filmed DVD version of Cats to name the most ruined I can think of among present day musicals. When dance numbers are involved, it's simple. Send the editor out for coffee. Pull the camera back about 30-40 feet and let it roll. Then take the 'take' and keep it away from the editor. "

Well, I wouldn't go quite THAT far! There are many examples of great editing of musical numbers in films, WEST SIDE STORY being perhaps the prime example.

Yeah. There is an art to editing a dance sequence artfully where the editor isn't so obnoxiously present in what we see. The best ones work naturally with the choreography and score to enhance and help build, rather than take over.
