Moulin Rouge - No chemistry, no heart, and it probably doesn't matter
Posted by: BostonTheatre 12:00 am EDT 07/15/18

Attended tonight's performance of Moulin Rouge.

Highlights: Karen Olivo; Danny Burstein; Sahr Ngaujah; The glorious set and lighting
Lowlights: Absolutely ZERO chemistry between Karen and Aaron Tveit, killing the entire purpose of the show. Aaron can definitely sing, but their match is just wrong wrong wrong. I need some ideas for a better match for her... anyone help me here? Maybe Matthew Morrison? Corey Cott? Someone needs to read older, yet maintain a sense of innocence. Steven Pasquale might be too old, but I'd rather see him in the part. Too bad he's in that silly play... Santino Fontana would probably be my choice but he's doing that silly Tootsie...

Other thoughts: It's not Karen's fault but she's too talented for Satine. It's kind of a Sally Bowles role, where the actress shouldn't be that great of a singer because it doesn't make sense why she hasn't made it.

Summary: As the Duke says in the show, the only thing he wants from Satine is her heart. Like the Tin Man, the main thing this show is missing is a heart. Can it get one before NYC? Debatable. Does it need one? Not from the beyond enthusiastic rock star audience that attended tonight's show.
