Donna's mother in Mamma Mia!
Posted by: dbg 12:16 am EDT 07/15/18

Turned on the TV tonight right as Mamma Mia! - the Sing-a-Long was starting and foolishly spent three hours watching it with endless commercial breaks. At one point Donna plops down on a bed and looking upward says, "Someone has it in for me, and I think it's my mother." The implication is clearly that her mother is looking down on her from heaven. Obviously the producers of Mamma Mia! - Here We Go Again are hoping no one noticed that line, so that there can be a nice cameo for Cher in the new film, which was highly promoted on the Sing-a-Long version tonight.

In Brighton Beach Memoirs, Kate says to Blanche: Go on. Have dinner with Frank Murphy. If Poppa ever heard me say those words, he'd get up from the cemetery and stand in front of our house with a big stick.

In Broadway Bound, he's a character.

I thought of that, too, and actually wrote about it in a letter to Dear Playbill many years ago.

Anyone seen the Scott Schwartz/Karen Ziemba production at The Old Globe?

They performed the plays in rep shortly after the Broadway revival shuttered before Broadway Bound could open. I saw it, and quite liked it, but can't remember how they handled the line.

Isn't much of the new Mamma Mia movie told in flashback to Donna's younger years? It's possible Cher's cameo is during one of the flashback scenes, but I'm not sure.

No, she's invited to Sophie's wedding.

Textual cohesion has never been MAMMA MIA!'s strong suit.

Textual cohesion has never been MAMMA MIA!'s strong suit.

That's an understatement. :-)

I reviewed a regional production of MAMMA MIA recently -- my first time seeing the show, actually. At one point, Donna mentions that her mother was a traditional American housewife who essentially disowned her when she became pregnant with Sophie, and who disapproves of her bohemian lifestyle.

From the trailer for MAMMA MIA: HERE I GO AGAIN, it seems like Donna's mother is some kind of glamorous millionaire with access to a private jet and a couture wardrobe. Okay.

And, of course, Cher is only three years older than Meryl Streep.

What I find weirder than Cher and Meryl playing Mother and Daughter is....

....the memory of them sitting on the porch of Karen Silkwood's house and all the buried lesbian tension. (And Kurt Russell's breathtaking torso.)

Certainly Cher's finest moment as an actor (including MOONSTRUCK) and one of Meryl's greatest roles.
