STRAIGHT WHITE MEN Today

Despite what you may have heard, this is not a play in trouble. Rather, it's a smart, funny, thoughtful and, best of all, surprising work for contemporary theatre, by which I mean a theatre that accounts for where we are and how we are living now. It's utterly subversive without overtly seeming to be and, in great part, by not being what it seems. At every turn, it's confounding and compelling. And also immensely encouraging. Young Jean Lee has written something that's very familiar and yet completely new and her work is immeasurably enhanced here by Anna D. Shapiro's relentlessly specific, clear-eyed direction and a cast that's uniformly good. If 2ndStage can continue to produce plays like this on Broadway, it will be a most welcome and meaningful achievement.
