| Some of the problems with this show have been well chronicled on this board. However, I just got back from today's matinee, and I really didn't hate it. Aspects of it were, in fact, enjoyable. The biggest problem with this show, for me, was not the score but the extremely unfocused book. The book is so scattered and all over the map - the whole show suffers for its lack of clarity and intent. Is it trying to be a satire of the disco era? Is it a chronicle of a young singer's rise to stardom? Is it the story of a young gay artist who turns to hustling after he gets devoured by his own ambition and the unforgiving machine of show business? The cast is working very hard. There are a few good songs, and the director and choreographer have made the show as visually interesting as possible. Unlike some of the other posters, I clearly heard the influence of disco and as the show progressed, the glossy sheen of disco gives way to the more raw sound of punk. No this wasn't disco or punk per se, but the influences were clearly there and, to my ears at least, intentional and well placed. If you're interested in this one, I would recommend catching it at the Atlantic. I can't see it transferring anywhere. I also wondered if certain aspects of Sammy's character were inspired by Madonna's early career. Obviously not the part about the child or the addiction - but other aspects had a ring of familiarity... |
