| It was a fantastic performance; I had only seen the in-theater screenings of MILLENNIUM APPROACHES and I'd been really looking forward to finally seeing this. This is the first time I've seen the revised (2010?) text staged; I missed the Off-Bway production a few years back and my only other viewing was the 1st national tour. I must admit I found it much more satisfying on the whole, especially the changes to the Heaven scene. It now felt like the climax that it should be, as the two contrasting ideas -- progress vs. stasis, more life vs. more death -- got to deck it out properly. I'd been a bit indifferent about the physical staging after seeing the filmed version, but I also remember some saying that the staging really saved its best theatrics for PERESTROIKA, and I'll admit that I really liked this. Beyond the excellent use of the Angel, I really loved the transition when Prior came back from heaven. It felt beautifully poetic. I also finally understood why Denise Hough has been getting the "next big thing" press that the NYT and others have rewarded her. I absolutely loved her performance today; it felt human in the best of ways. I was also super impressed with Beth Malone's Angel. I'd only seen her do FUN HOME before this; she's a great actor. I was very very moved in the theater this afternoon. I love it when a good production does that to me. Kudos to the entire ANGELS IN AMERICA company. - GMB |
