I recommend to people not to go to final performances such as this if it is their first time seeing the production...... Frequently it is fans, friends and family that show up and as an audience they get caught up in the significance of the performance and the excitement resulting it becoming an event. I was there. I don't recall the exact number of standing ovations but, I was in the first row of the mezzanine and could see most of the orchestra. They popped up en masse. Was it every single person? Were they equally motivated? Don't know. Heck.....I was on my feet enjoying the energy going back and forth between the stage and the audience. It felt palpable. I daresay that most of you on this board know why so many of us were there yesterday. It wasn't just another performance. For all you negative nancy's out there....there are not a lot more Dolly Levi roles out there waiting for Ms. Peters. Let us fans alone to enjoy that special time with her.
An interesting thing though. This was not her best Hello, Dolly! performance. She had a few vocal issues during the first act.....entirely gone during the second act. That being said there was so much more to her performance than just hitting all the notes.
Lastly. I am not a big fan of required standing ovations for every performance. It detracts from the significance. In this case, I liken the performance as an event to a rock concert. Ever go to one? The energy is high and we are on our feet for the entire set. Yesterday was not so different. |
